Question: 1

The city of IOWA is divided into five major sectors of garbage collection. The city garbage collector uses around 65 gallon to collect garbage from the single and compound families from the city. The Iowa City usually maintains all the garbage collection and distribution carts. In order to ease the process of garbage collection, the city usually issue polythene bags which much longer in size and which have the potential to hold garbage of about 50 pounds. It is estimated that about 1000 ton of garbage is collected from various location in Iowa City with a period of 5 days (Jordan, 2015). As a matter of fact, garbage collection is not a constant affair and the disposal of garbage might vary from one location to the other depending on the volume of consumption and disposal within that location and period. There is a possibility of the garbage increasing or decreasing within the two week span within which the garbage is to be collected.

Generally, the garbage collection form Iowa City might be categorized as solid or liquid. The kind of waste can further be categorized as organic, re-usable, hazardous and recyclable waste. The fact that most of the waste collected from IOWA City are collected from home waste, around half of the garbage collected can be packaged as it is believed to be wet waste from kitchen use (Jordan, 2015). Moreover, there are many plastic related packaging in the kitchen consumption hence plastic collected from the city garbage is estimated to be the quarter of the total garbage collected from the IOWA City.

 

Question: 3

The garbage collected from the city is taken to the recycle bin, landfill and other in the compost pile.  The garbage which can be recycled is usually taken to the recycle companies for recycling while the composing garbage is usually taken to the landfills.

Question: 4

The people involved in garbage collection in Iowa City are the city garbage collector employed by the city council in the city. Given the fact that the garbage collectors handle dangerous and hazardous material the city council has provided them with the protective gears such as the gumboots, gloves, spectacles and apron to protect them from contamination of germs and diseases (Jordan, 2015). The garbage collection also needs to be vaccinated with germs related vaccination in order to protect them from contamination of germs during garbage collecting in the future.

Question: 5

The recycling center and landfills in Iowa City are located on the riverside, Kolona and Johnson county. The decomposing garbage is the type of garbage that is taken into these landfills. Whenever the landfills are filled the garbage collector department usually burns the garbage to create more space. The fact that the waste in the landfill is decomposing in nature some decompose and the remaining one is burnt by the garbage collectors.

Question: 6

The trash generated can be reduced by ensuring that there is little or even no wastage during consumption. In addition, the manufacturing companies may be of great help when it comes to product packaging (Jordan, 2015). The companies must ensure that they avoid non-degradable packaging materials such as polythene and ensure that they package using degradable materials.

Question: 7

The city of Iowa might assist the apartment renters in reduction of trash by collecting the garbage regularly and charging more for renters with more garbage. As a matter of fact, the city should be involved in the garbage reduction program because it has the mandate to determine the trash collection charges and trash de-compost programs.

Question: 8

Although it is cheaper to use the government sponsor garbage collectors, I would prefer the City of Iowa to use a private corporate system in the recycling, separation and collection of the waste as well as decomposing because it is accountable and reliable.

Question: 9

In conclusion, I do believe that the above discussed garbage collection, recycling and decomposition can work in New York City (Jordan, 2015). In order to ensure that the city is clean all the time, the garbage and the trash collectors needs to be protected using the right gears, the renters should be accountable and the program should be appropriately sponsored. The general public should be involved in garbage collection through establishment of recycle bins and establishment of laws against careless littering.  In order to reduce waste in the university and city, I would personally ensure accountability of the renters and garbage collectors.
