Assessment Title: A practical exercise and a 3000 word written assignment in which you reflect on an interview with a service user.
Assessment Details/ Components:
There are two parts to this assignment, a practical exercise and a written reflective essay.
1. Practical Exercise in which you are required to conduct a short interview with a service user and provide a summary of the interview outlining the identified theme/s. The summary is not included in the word count. You are required to conduct a short (10 – 15 minute) interview with a service user in which you invite them to tell you about their experience of the health visiting, school nursing or district nursing service that you work in. You can use the suggested interview questions attached to this guidance, or devise your own. You will need to take notes during this interview and then write a summary of the discussion. You must not audio record the interview. From your notes, draw out the themes from the service user’s experience and choose one that you will discuss in your essay in greater depth. You will need to attach this summary and identified theme/s to your written essay.
2. Written Assignment essay in which you critically explore how service users are involved in the design, delivery and evaluation of the service that you are working in during your student placements. You are required to conduct a short interview with a service user and taking one of the themes from the interview, consider how their experience of the service can be used to influence improvements in service delivery. This written component is a 3000 word assignment.
In the first section you are required to critically evaluate the role service users play in your organisation in the design, delivery and evaluation of the health visiting, school nursing or district nursing service that you work in. You will need to draw on local policy to do this. In addition you are required to critically evaluate the way service users are involved in your organization utilizing theoretical models of service user involvement.
In the second section you are asked to take one theme from your service user interview and critically discuss this in relation to evidence based literature. This may, for example, be around accessing services (no one answers the telephone) or continuity of care (the service user sees a different practitioner every time). You may find your service user highlights communication skills as an issue (not understanding the explanation or advice given) or workload issues (no one seems to have enough time to listen to their real concerns). You may find that service users particularly liked an aspect of the service such as the knowledge and competence of the practitioners. You will need to evaluate the issue that has been raised by the service user in relation to both local and national policy and guidance, and other evidence-based literature in order to establish whether this is a recognised issue in your field of practice and what best practice may be.
The third section requires you to consider a solution to address the issue raised by the service user. You need to consider how this can be done at both the level of the individual practitioner (how you could change your own practice) and at service level. For example, access to services could be improved by enhanced communication between the practitioner and the service user regarding the telephone number and the best time of day to call (individual practitioner level) and in addition a duty rota could be instigated in the office to ensure that someone is always available to answer the phone and deal with referrals and questions (service level). You need to support your solutions with evidence from the literature.
This is a reflective essay and it is permissible to use the first person when discussing your experience, for example: ‘Although the local policy stated that service users should be part of any discussions around service redesign, in my experience service users rarely participated because their complex heath issues made it very hard for them to attend meetings’. However it is also expected that you will write in the third person when referring to evidence from the literature, for example: ‘Scammel (2015) argues that although service user involvement can take many forms, a key element of success is to avoid tokenism and embrace authentic engagement.’ The balance of these two ‘voices’ is important to the essay; it is crucial that you support your experience and opinion with evidence from credible literature sources.
It is essential that you do not reveal the identity of the service user that you have interviewed, or use any detail in your essay or summary that would enable them to be identified.
