You will research and write a 3-5 page paper on a topic that interests you about Jon Krakauer’s book Into the Wild. You will use 3 sources: the book itself and 2 other sources: newspaper or magazine articles, youtube, a film, etc–depending on your topic. You will quote from your sources throughout the paper and use MLA style. In your conclusion, please give your evaluation of the book–was it worth the read? Would you recommend others to read Into the Wild?
Possible topics:
• Compare the book to the 2007 film version: how was the book adapted into the film?
• Compare the book to one of the documentaries, The Call of the Wild (2007) or Return to the Wild: The Chris McCandless Story (PBS 2014)
• Compare Jon Krakauer’s portrayal of Chris McCandless’ parents to his sister, Carine McCandless’, portrayal of them in her memoir The Wild Truth (2014)
• Discuss how Jon Krakauer wrote Into the Wild, his writing process and career
• Discuss the meaning and the fate of the Magic Bus, now on display at The Museum of the North at the University of Alaska-Fairbanks
• Discuss Chris McCandless’ experience and connect to news and information about Denali National Park, the Teklanika River, the Cantwell Glacier
Do not merely summarize the book but focus in on one of these topics. Remember to work in quotes from your 2 research sources and the book itself. Here is a sample outline:
Introduction: Briefly summarize the book and its themes (nature, freedom, rebellion, independence). Then focus in on your thesis-what aspect of the book, exactly, that you will be exploring in the paper: for example, how significant the Magic Bus has become in the years after McCandless’ death
Body of the paper: Discuss 3 specific points or sub-topics, quoting from your sources and the book itself. For example: if your topic is the Magic Bus, in the body of your paper you will discuss how and why it became a place of pilgrimage and what happened to the bus this past June
Conclusion: Connect the meaning of your topic back to the book overall and give your evaluation of the book. For example, if your topic is the Magic Bus, connect the meaning of the Magic Bus back to the book and the meaning of Chris McCandless’ life overall. Give your evaluation of the book–was it worth the read? What did you get out of it? Can you connect to those people who felt compelled to visit the Magic Bus?
