The Take-Home Exam
Throughout the year we have addressed six key critical topics in the class discussions: Christology, eschatology, the New Testament as history, the New Testament as literature, and the faith of Jesus, and the social justice teaching of Jesus.
These six topics are part of your take-home exam assignment: you will need to show that you understand what was taught in class concerning three of these subjects in the form of three short essays of 4–5 pages long double-spaced. Use the Word Template on Moodle entitled “T203 Take Home Exam Template.”
As the goal of this assignment is for you to demonstrate that you understand what was taught in class, you will not need to do any research besides reviewing the class PowerPoint and the class discussions: I repeat, the goal is for you to demonstrate you understand these critical areas of studies as discussed in class, not the view of other scholars.
You do not need to use outside sources, and if you do, they must be used in direct relation to what is said in class.
You do not have to agree with what was taught said in class, but you should demonstrate you understand what was taught in class.
You get to choose which of three of the six topics from the following three pairs of questions: answer one question from each pair of questions. If you answer all six, then only your first question will be marked. If you fail to answer a question from a pair of questions, then you will get 0.
Each topic has a main question with sub-questions that should be addressed. Do not answer each of the sub-questions individually, but rather incorporate everything into essay format.
Each of your mini-essays should begin with an introductory paragraph providing an abstract of what you are about to say. This should begin with your thesis statement (= your main point) on the subject. Your mini-essay should also have a concluding paragraph that summarizes what you have just said. These two paragraphs will be similar with the first outlining your argument and the last outlining your main conclusions.
Use the template, “Take Home Exam Template” on Moodle. It is located at the top in the middle under important information (just below these instructions).
Also, be sure to watch the beginning of the class discussion for classes 24, 25, 26 where general questions on this assignment are addressed (mostly class 24) and things you can say for each pair of questions (3 and 4 in class 24; 5 and 6 in class 25; and 1 and 2 in class 26).
Choose one question from EACH of the following three pairs of questions
Choose one these two questions:
1. What sort of Christology does the New Testament present?
a. What were the messianic expectations in Judaism of the time?
i. What messiahs were expected?
b. What sort of Christological understanding did Jesus have of himself?
i. Did Jesus teach he was the Messiah?
c. When did the disciples understand he was the Messiah?
i. If so, which Messiah?
d. Does Jesus fulfil Jewish Christological expectations?
e. Is Christian Christology low or high?
i. Was Jesus before his death seen as more man or God?
ii. How does this differ to his after-death manifestation.
f. Does the understanding of Jesus as Messiah change over time? If so, how?
g. In the above be sure to discuss the Christology of Paul, the synoptic gospels (Mark, Luke, and Matthew), John, and Hebrews, and whether they differ.
2. Describe the eschatological expectations found in the New Testament
a. Describe Jesus’s eschatological teaching
i. How did it differ from the Jewish understanding of the time?
ii. Is it a realized or a future eschatology?
iii. Did his teaching come true?
b. Does Christian eschatology differ from that taught by Jesus?
i. Does the role of Jesus change?
ii. Does Christian eschatology change over time?
c. In the above be sure to discuss the synoptic gospels, John, the letters of Paul, and the Book of Revelation.
Choose one of these two questions:
3. Are the four gospels and the Book of Acts history?
a. In what sense are these books history?
b. How do they differ from how we do history?
i. How did ancient historiography differ from modern historiography?
ii. Are the events in each book presented in chronological order?
c. How reliable are they historically?
d. Are they based on oral tradition?
i. Is oral tradition reliable?
e. Use examples from all five books (Mark, Luke, Matthew, John, and Acts)
4. The four gospels and the Book of Acts as literature
a. In what sense are these books literature
b. What techniques do they use that we associate more with fiction rather than non-fiction?
c. How are they structured?
i. How is meaning conveyed through the structure
d. Do they reference other literature?
e. Be sure to reference all four gospels and the Book of Acts
Choose one of the two following questions
5. Describe faith in the New Testament
a. Describe the understanding of faith in Judaism
b. How does the faith of Jesus differ from that of his contemporaries?
i. For example, the Sadducees, the Pharisees, and the Essenes
c. How do Jesus’s Christian followers such a Paul and John understand faith?
i. Does it differ from the faith of Jesus?
d. Is faith in the New Testament more about what you do or what you believe?
e. Be sure to reference the synoptic gospels, John, the letters of Paul, and James
6. Describe the teaching of Jesus in regards to social justice
a. What was the way of Jesus?
b. What is social justice, and how does the teaching of Jesus embody it?
c. How does it relate to social justice found in Judaism?
i. Was it an unusual teaching at the time in Judaism?
d. How central was this teaching to later Christians, e.g., Paul and John?
e. Do the teaching and the faith of Jesus differ?
For each question you should demonstrate you are aware and understand the critical issues in reaching conclusions on these subjects.
