Hypothesis: Students should provide a hypothesis for research questions 2-4.
Design: Experimental Study using a single group repeated measures design with order of treatment randomized.
Population: CSU-Pueblo EXHP students.
Sample: Convenience sample of EXHP students enrolled in the EXHP 343 class, Fall, 2012.
Outcome (Dependent) Variables: 100 yard run time, number of steps taken, step rate and step length.
Grouping (Independent) Variable: Shod versus unshod running condition.
Test Procedures. Student will be randomly assigned a testing order (shod then unshod or vice versa). Each student will complete an individual warm-up of their own design, then complete the two 100 yard run trials. Each trial should be approximately 5 minutes apart or more to allow full recovery. Trials will be hand timed using the average of two timers. The number of steps taken during each trial will be counted by an observer, then divided into 100 yards to calculate the average step length. The number of steps taken will be multiplied by 60 seconds and then divided by the100 yard time to calculate the average step rate per min.
Statistical Analysis: Students will access data from a spread sheet for analysis. Once step rate and step length are calculated, means and standard deviations will be calculated for run time, steps, step length and step rate. Differences in time, step rate and step length between shod and unshod conditions will be evaluated using paried samples t-tests. Predictive relationships between steps and times by unshod and shod conditions
will be assessed using regression.
