1. Locke and Hobbes are both considered to be modern political thinkers, though only one of them is considered to be liberal in the classical sense. They are also considered to be proponents of the so-called social contract tradition of political thought. Compare and contrast the thought of Locke and Hobbes, discussing, among other things, their understanding of political morality, freedom, religion, rights, the purpose of government, etc. To conclude, which thinker does a better job of discussing the nature of political power and the proper use of that power?
2. We have spent some time discussing the distinction between the ancients and the moderns in the history of political theory. Diamond’s essay at the beginning of the semester was a guide for our thinking about this. Drawing upon the texts of Diamond, Plato, Aristotle, Locke, Hobbes, and Machiavelli, provide as full and complete a description as you can of the differences between ancient and modern political theory. Conclude by assessing which type of political theory has the superior understanding of the nature of politics and why?
