Guidelines for Research Paper
-Word limit: 8-10 pages (text), double spaced, font-12, Times New Roman
-Complete with introduction, conclusion, and works cited page.
-Use of sources: Minimally 8 sources, among which 6 have to be referred academic articles from the library database. The rest can be articles from magazines, newspapers or others.
-Library databases for academic articles: Go to the library page, click Library Databases: http://www.ccc.edu/colleges/washington/departments/Pages/Library-databases-by-category.aspx Recommended ones: Academic Search Complete, CQ Researcher, JSTOR, Opposing Viewpoints in Context. -Introduction: Make sure your introduction has these elements:
-Lead-in sentences to get reader’s attention to the issue
-Introduce the topic and narrow down the focus
-Clear, specific and supportable thesis on the topic: Your clear position on the issue
-Body paragraphs: They should follow the order of questions in your research paper proposal. Each body paragraph should be ½ or 2/3 of a page long. No paragraph should be longer than a page. Follow these guidelines for all body paragraphs:
-Topic sentence that clearly states the main idea of the paragraph
-A brief elaboration on the topic sentence in a few sentences
-Sources and examples to support the topic sentence
– In using outside sources, follow these steps:
-Transitional words or brief introduction to the author
-Adequate summary of the source(s): A combination of summary and short quotations. The summary should give clear and adequate details of the source’s main arguments on the topic, usually 100-150 words, followed by short quotations that reinforce the points. In using isolated quotations, provide necessary and clear context under which the quotation is made.
-Post-source comment: It can be done in a few ways: 1) Reiterate in a few sentences importance of the source in supporting the topic sentence; 2)Highlight in a few sentences a few important points that need to be further emphasized; 3) Write down in a few sentences your agreement or disagreement; 4) Apply the source to your personal experience or make a connection to reality or your observation: It can be done in a few sentences or put in a separate paragraph if longer.
-Add short but relevant personal experiences or observations that really illustrate your arguments in the paragraphs, no more than 20 percent of all textual support. Maintain a strong academic tone and a good balance between outside sources and personal examples.
-Conclusion: A separate conclusion that summarizes the main arguments and revisits the thesis.
-In-text citation of sources: Follow MLA and acknowledge all the sources you use in the text. Either write down the author’s name in the beginning of the sentence (The first time use his/her full name; ever after use only the last name) or put the last name in parenthesis at the end; for direct quotations, put the page number in parenthesis at the end of the quotation. -Works Cited page: List all the sources alphabetically. You can cut and paste the source information from the library page, but make sure you use the OWL page to make sure it is 100 percent correct.
