Reflective Report Assessment Guidelines: 2020-21
The following guidelines provide an explanation of the arrangements for the assessment ‘Reflective Report’ which is one of the assessments on this course. Please note that more information on this assessment can also be found in the Module Handbook for this course which can be found on the Moodle page.
What is a formative assessment?
A formative assessment is one where you receive feedback but you are not formally marked and the performance on the assessment does not count towards your final grade for the course.
Is the formative assessment for BUSI1151 compulsory?
In normal circumstances completing the formative assessment for BUSI1151 would be considered a requirement of the course. Considering the challenges of the Covid pandemic, however, this will not be the case this year. You are still strongly advised to complete the formative assessment as the work that you do, and the feedback you receive from your tutor, will be of benefit to you when you complete the final (summative) ‘Reflective Report’ assessment in March 2021. However, as mentioned, you have the option in 2020 – 21 not to complete the formative assessment. If you do not intend to complete the formative assessment could you please send an email to your tutorial leader (you can find their email address in the Module Handbook) by Nov 17th 2020.
How will the formative assessment for BUSI 1151 work in 2020/21?
The assessment ‘Reflective Report’ for BUSI1151 will begin with a formative assessment. The formative task for this assessment requires to you to think of an idea for a new business. You will either be completing this task individually or in groups. Please see the notes below for full guidance on this.
Once you have developed your business idea you will need to complete the Powerpoint slides in which you explain some of the main dimensions of this idea. For both groups and individuals these Powerpoint slides will be submitted on Moodle. You will then receive feedback on the business idea from your tutorial leader. You will take forward the work you do on the formative assessment as you prepare to make your final submission for the Reflective Report, this will be in March 2021.
What do you include in your Dragons’ Den Presentation Slides?
The slides that you submit for this formative assessment will be submitted via Moodle in December 2020. If you are working in Groups you will also be completing a presentation of your idea. Please structure your slides as follows:-
This is an introductory slide – please include the following:-
Name of the Product or Service
List of group members and their student numbers or individual name and student number if it is an individual submission.
A clear explanation of the product or service that you are proposing.
Please explain the value the product or service will bring to customers and the gap in the market that it will fill.
An analysis of the industry that you will be entering and the market segment you plan to exploit within this industry (please include references to any sources you have used for this in your final slide)
An outline of competitors that you have identified. (please include references to any sources you have used for this in your final slide)
Please discuss what makes your product/service viable and how you see your firm developing in the first year of operation. Please also explain the price you plan to charge for your product/service and how this compares to competitors (please note: financial forecasts are not required for this presentation)
List of references – please include here any sources that you have used for your work eg for your research on the industry or for your research on competitors.
Reflective Report Formative Task: Group Submission and Individual Submission Options
Because of the challenges posed by the Covid pandemic there have been changes in how the Reflective Report Formative Assessment will be organised for the year 2020-21. Students that are attending on campus sessions will still have the opportunity to work in student groups and present their ideas via Dragons’ Den sessions. There will also, however, be the option for students to work individually on this task in the light of the challenges posed by the pandemic.
Group Submission Option
For students that have worked in a group the Dragons’ Den presentations will be spread over two weeks and will take place on Tues 24th November and Tues 8th December. Please note that there will not be the normal lectures and tutorials on either of these days as your presentations will take place during the normal course times and in the normal tutorial rooms. If you are attending an online only session and are working in a group then you will be able to do a group presentation via Teams.
Your presentation should last for 10 minutes and all members of the group should participate in the presentation. Please see above for guidance on how to structure your presentation. Following the presentation you will be asked questions and given verbal feedback on your idea. Please note that the presentation is not formally assessed and does not count towards your final grade for the course. The idea of the presentation is, instead, to provide your group with feedback which can then be used to assess the idea as it currently stands.
Individual Submission Option
If you work on this assessment individually then you will be required to prepare PowerPoint slides for your business idea. These will then be submitted on Moodle. You will follow the structure for the presentation as is outlined above. You should also include in your PowerPoint slides approximately 50 words of commentary for each slide (apart from the opening and closing slides where not commentary is required) explaining the points that are included in each slide.
Reflective Report: Summative Assessment Submission (March 2021)
As mentioned previously once you have completed the ‘’Reflective Report Formative Assessment’ (either in a group or individually) you will receive feedback on it via Moodle in January 2021. You can then use this feedback as you prepare the ‘Reflective Report’ submission in March 2021.
The submission in March 2021 is a summative assessment, this means that the mark you receive for this work will be the one that you receive for this part of the course’s assessment (which constitutes 50% of your overall mark for the course).
Please see the Module Handbook (available on the Moodle site) for full guidelines of the different sections that you need to complete for the ‘Reflective Report’.
Can you change your business idea you use for the ‘Reflective Report’ assessment once you have completed the formative assessment?
It is a possibility that there might be some students who have worked in a group who would like to change the business idea they discuss when they come to the summative (final) submission of the Reflective Report assessment in March 2021. While this would not be allowed in normal circumstances, because of the challenges of the Covid pandemic, this will be permitted for the academic year 2020 / 21. If you decide to take this option you will need to explain this when you submit the final (summative) version of the Reflective Report assessment in March 2021. You will need to explain this when you complete the Question 2 (Analysis of the Business Idea), Question 3 (Team Work) and Question 4 (Presentation Experience) parts of the ‘Reflective Report’ assessment.
A reminder to please look in the Module Handbook, available on the Moodle site, for full guidelines of the different sections that you need to complete for the summative (final) submission of the ‘Reflective Report’ in March 2021.
