Then, define the writer’s overall point, specifically in relation to the concept of AfricanAmerican identity. How is the essay structured to show the ways in which Black individuals’ identities are affected within familial and/or societal contexts?

Choose ONE of the following:
Gates, “In the Kitchen” (213-18)
Baldwin, “Stranger in the Village” (165-74)
Cole, “Black Body” (174-82)
Then, define the writer’s overall point, specifically in relation to the concept of AfricanAmerican identity. How is the essay structured to show the ways in which Black
individuals’ identities are affected within familial and/or societal contexts? What
strategies does the writer use to make his point? What is the writer’s tone, and how
effective is that tone? To what degree does the writer incorporate intellectual and
emotional appeals, and how effective are they? What connection does the writer define or
imply between personal experience and the larger context within which that experience
occurs, and how is that relevant to the point of the work? Be sure to focus on the essay,
not on the writer’s experience. Also, as the editors make clear, Cole’s essay is in many
ways a response to Baldwin’s, which would make for a fascinating analysis of the
relationship between the two works; however, I am asking you to examine only one of
them, so make sure to do so.
You can assume that your reader (i.e., Professor Bourdeau) is familiar with the essays, so
you do not need to summarize the one you analyze; you should, however, incorporate
textual references and citations to support your argument. The questions listed above are
intended as guidelines, not as strict requirements, so do not try too hard to answer all of
them in the order in which they are presented. Remember that your assignment is to
define the writer’s point, not to agree or disagree with that point.
Please do not incorporate research into your paper; I am interested in your analysis, not
that of the critics/experts. As I note in the policy statement for this class, the rules of
academic honesty apply in all contexts, including this paper, and because I am asking you
not to include the ideas of others (even if you change the wording) in this assignment,
you need to follow the guidelines. If you copy and paste from an online source without
acknowledging that you are doing so, you are plagiarizing and will fail this course.
Reminder: This essay needs to be emailed to me no later than 5:00 p.m. on the day
listed above. If you do not hand in your essay, you will not pass the class. This applies to
everyone.
