Pain Management Objectives:
1. Recognize issues in pain management that influence safe and quality patient care
2. Evaluate opposing statements pertaining to effective pain management.
3. Develop position statements both supporting and opposing the statements provided.
Directions:
• You will essentially be having a debate with yourself. For each of the opposing statements stated below, create a discussion for both supporting the statements and opposing the statements.
• Support your position for each perspective with current evidence.
• There are four total topics to address.
o Be sure to include political, economic, and social considerations for individuals, organizations, and government agencies (micro, meso, and macro levels).
Secure 10-12 peer reviewed journal articles (2015-2020) supporting and opposing the statements.•

1. First Defense
a. The policies from the Joint Commission (2018) support proper pain management from the nursing perspective. •The policies from the Joint Commission (2018) hinder proper pain management from the nursing perspective.
2. Second Defense
a. The nurse must take on the role of healthcare team leader in order to help manage the patient’s perception of his/her own pain experience.
b. The nurse cannot take on the role of healthcare team leader since this is outside the realm of his/her scope of practice according to the ANA Nursing Scope and Standards for Practice document.
3. Third Defense
a. Safe houses are an effective and valid method for helping those with opioid addictions.
b. Safe houses are one of the worst methods for helping those with opioid addictions.
4. Fourth Defense
a. Providing access to clean syringes is one of the best methods for decreasing the spread of disease related to the opioid crisis.
b. Providing access to clean syringes only increases the negative effects of the opioid crisis instead of decreasing the effects of the crisis
