Conformity in Students Attitudes Towards Sports
Conformity among students refers to their adjustments on opinions, behavior, and attitudes to coaches, athletes, and club management. They adapt to the discipline of the club and sports team. They become favorite players to the tenacious and authoritarian coaches. The conformists adopt to the sports team and the club discipline.
Data Collection Procedures
The essay researches for conformity of 40 girls and 40 boys from Belgrade high school using the Asch’s technology. Data were collected using questionnaires issued to a sample of 160 athletes from eight sports. Out of the 160 athletes, there were 81 males and 79 females. Those playing individual sports such as athletics, boxing, tennis, and karate were 81, while 79 involved in team sports such as basketball, volleyball, basketball, and handball. The athletes aged 25 years and two months, while competition experience was nine years and ten months.
Apart from questionnaires, the researchers advertised the experiment on the political discussion in the lower and upper-level courses of social sciences, the campus fliers and research websites of the university. In the procedure, the participants entered into a raffle for the one of eight $25 gift cards in Amazon. The initial participants were through with the study on May 2013 and closed in 2013, December. The data collection procedure did not record any scandal; thus no outer events pose threats to the study validity. Those participating in the experiment signed an informed consent form, while those in the control group offered implied consent through completing an online survey. The practice occurred after reading and understanding informed consent located on the first web page of the survey. The two consent methods were approved by Penn State’s IRB. The participants offered informed consent procedures that contribute to the work and complying with ethical standards within relevant national committees on human experimentation with Helsinki.
2. Statistics Conducting Data Analysis
The research used a modified Conformity Scale as the analysis instrument. The modification required lingual adaptation without changing the essence. The modified conformity scale assumed internal reliability of α=.57. The statements related to conformity include Coaches as earning their respect since they are team leaders. Second, it is appropriate when the coach approaches athletes on certain questions. The coaches face great stress while in the field; thus, they should be forgiven and understood. All the coaches must be realized at an obedient mood. The conformity towards the management of the club state that it should be respected since it runs it is benevolent and that the prosperity of the club defines its major interest. The management of the club requires influencing the professional work of the coach. The athletes evaluate their agreement with the provided statements using the five-point Likert scale. The scale point 1 explains the strongly disagree, point 2 the partially disagree, point 3 the unsure group, point 4, the partially agree, and point 5, strongly agree. The dependent variables include 1(sport type individual or team), 2(gender), 3(competition experience (less and more or equal to 10 years.
Contribution to society, individuals, and groups
The research defines the differences between a team and individual sports. Moreover, it is appropriate when coaches consult athletes on various questions. The ideas of the coaches in the field must be obeyed. Thus, the influence of the Coach’s professional work originates from the management of the club. Thus, players must respect the coach.
Analysis and Discussion
The team and individual sport athletes prove conformists towards the coach. The athletes of the team in the sport are bigger conformists towards the coach. There is a high confidence level among the coaches and their willingness to give in psycho-physical demands. There is high conformity towards coach training tested athletes. The athletes require being ready to accept the way of the coach. Thus, coaches have educational, professional, and ethical qualities which deserve the athlete conformity they were coaching. The conformity of male and female athletes towards the coach equals. Moreover, female athletes have higher conformity than male athletes.
The high conformity among less experienced athletes towards the management of the club attributes to their low knowledge, about assigning duties between the club and coach management.
The analysis of variance shows that there is a higher conformity degree in the homogenous gender group than heterogeneous persons. The highest conformity degree exists among males compared to male subjects receiving instructions. The desire of students to be accepted and desired declared a positive relationship between altruistic and conformity.
The questionnaires were closed limiting the opinions of athletes regarding various statements. Moreover, it was important to compare the conformity of other athletes from other countries such as Herzegovina and Bosnia with elite athletes from other world parts.
The community expects a lot from coaches including the young adolescents and their parents. The society, in general, expects that coaches have enough skilled education, stay competent, remain ambitious, and hardworking.
