2nd Battle of Fallujah (Phantom Fury)

Students will analyze a commander’s performance from a selected historical battle. This analysis will be 6-8 pages in length, and will evaluate how effectively the commander executed the Mission Command Approach and the Command and Control Warfighting Function during the battle. Specifically, students will examine how he utilized the mission command principles. Students must address at least four of the seven principles in their analysis, and suggest how the commander’s utilization of those principles ultimately affected the battle’s outcome. The student must determine by their research if the selected commander executed good or bad mission command during the battle.

Breifing Requirement

Students will analyze a commander’s performance from a selected historical battle. This analysis will be 9-11 minutes in duration, and will evaluate how effectively the commander executed the Mission Command Warfighting Function. Specifically, students will examine how the commander executed his mission based on the seven principles of mission command. Students must address at least four of those seven principles in their analysis, and suggest how the commander’s execution of those principles ultimately affected the battle’s outcome.

Battles Lists

Your instructor will determine which battle you will analyze. If you have a preference, inform your instructor of that fact.

Please note there are two lists of battles. Your instructor is free to use either list or both.

  1. New Battles List (2020). This list was developed upon the request of some schools who wanted to provide expanded choices for their students.
  2. Old Battles List. This is the legacy list which has been in use for several years.
