Public International Law (SXL-4040)

Assignment 1 (25%): Assessed Essay Plan

Word Count: 1,000 Words

Students must submit an essay plan, which should be an outline of what they propose to write for their research essay. They will be assessed on their ability to write an effective essay plan, that is, what they are writing about, why they are writing it (i.e. what is the problem), and how they intend to address this in the essay. Students must include the following headings, but are welcome to add any of their own that they think could be useful:

  • Research Question (or Essay Title)
  • Context of Essay
  • Central Arguments

Beyond this, there is no set structure, but good practice examples will be shared on Blackboard in advance. They must reference where necessary, and also include a brief bibliography of proposed readings (not included in word count).

Although students are not required to write an essay plan on one of the research essay questions, it is recommended that they do so in order to get valuable feedforward for the research essay and to enable them to begin their research at an early stage.
