Instructions:

Answer the following questions in as much detail as possible. Your answers should be at least two paragraphs in length and needs to follow a logical thought process throughout. Please type your discussion below each question. You should turn in this assignment using the assignment tab in module six on Moodle. Please do not email me this assignment.

1.) What is style in music? What is form in music? Why are style and form NOT interchangeable terms to musicians?

2.) Explain the concerto form in your own words. In what ways does the concerto from the Classical time period sound different than the concerto from the Romantic time period?

3.) Explain the symphony form in your own words. In what ways does the symphony from the Classical time period sound different than the symphony from the Romantic time period?

4.) What are three major differences between the concerto form and the symphony form? What are three major similarities between the concerto from and the symphony form? Which form is your personal favorite and why?

5.) Stylistically, what are some differences between the opera and the operetta? In what ways might they be similar? Which is similar to the modern musical and why?

6.) Choose your favorite moment (2-4 minutes) from Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No.3. Explain why this is your favorite moment using the terms and information that you have learned in the music modules. Be sure to include a marker so that I can listen (example- my favorite moment is marker xx:xx-xx:xx).

7.) Find and choose a concerto that you enjoy listening to. Explain why you enjoy listening to this concerto using the terms and information you have learned from the music modules. Your concerto can be for any instrument (except piano) and can be from any composer (except the composers we have discussed in this module’s checklist).

8.) Choose your favorite moment (2-4 minutes) from Beethoven’s Symphony No.9. Explain why this is your favorite moment using the terms and information that you have learned in the music modules. Be sure to include a marker so that I can listen (example- my favorite moment is marker xx:xx-xx:xx).

9.) Find and choose a symphony that you enjoy. Explain why you enjoy listening to this symphony using the terms and information you have learned from the music modules. Your symphony can be from any composer (except the composers we have discussed in this module’s checklist).

10.) Explain how listening to classical music is different than listening to modern popular music? In what ways has the music modules changed your understanding of classical music?
