Application on the Basis of life
The current events in life apply the knowledge of Biology that simply comes from the definition of Biology as the study of life. In the course unit Biology 101-The basis of life, we have learned about cells is defined as the basic unit of life. Additionally, the cell theory we learned is the cellular basis of life which states that a cell is the basic functional unit of all living organism. Therefore, life has to begin with a cell. The knowledge can be applied to explain specific occurrence in life that we have experienced. It is clear that scientists don’t have the knowledge to create or form a cell and that is why they always use the pre-existing cell in the creation of other similar cell or modification of another.
The principles and skills in Biology are used daily in the areas of health, food preparation, hygiene, and others. In the unit, we learned that a cell is very tinny and we cannot see it with our necked eyes, and therefore we must use a microscope to view it. Based on hygiene there is always campaign by health providers and organizations like world health organization (WHO) telling people to continually wash their hands daily before they eat anything (Sadava, Hillis, Heller & Berenbaum, 2009). Therefore, this implies that an individual cannot see the germs that might be in their hands since some microbes and bacteria cannot be seen. This media is perhaps related to the knowledge through biology that a cell is tiny and microscopic basic unit of life. Thus, the constant washing of hands using soap before eating anything removes acquired microbes from the skin hence controlling the spread of very infectious diseases like cholera and others that are acquired through germ intake.
Moreover, another application relevant to the unit (Basis of life) is in the healthcare systems. There is always a set of instructions given during medication to take all the prescribed drugs for examples the antibiotic pills. Therefore, if the patients assume the information and offset the instructions, then there is always the possibility of a bacteria or microbe surviving that can then pass their genes to the next generation and hence multiplication. That is why in most cases the patient who did not complete the dosage instruction from the doctor, recovers and then falls sick again after some time. These indicate that the small or little dosage might have destroyed some bacteria leaving few or a single one that could not course harm. Therefore, with time the bacteria or the microbe multiplies to the point of causing some health effect to the host body. That is why the individual gets sick again after some time. Therefore, a cell small unit but can replicate or divide through mitosis or meiosis.
The knowledge of cells is also applied in food production through genetics. The genetically modified organisms (GMO) are usually prepared from a different cell through a modification of some genetic make-ups (Sadava, Hillis, Heller & Berenbaum, 2009). Most of the products in the markets today are not natural but made through this process. Therefore, a cell as the basic unit of life is used in the production process to make another organism through a modification process. Thus, understand that the current process mentioned and others can be traced through a perfect understanding of Biology 101: The basis of life.
