The primary objective of the institute of medicine (IOM) report was to give guidelines through which the US as a whole could transform its healthcare system. In light of this, IOM worked together with Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to find a solution to the existing healthcare issues. The committee’s plan on the future of nursing and IOM study, thus, gave a multiplicity of suggestions that are designed to advance the role of the nursing profession in achieving an efficient healthcare system (Gillespie et al., 2018). The paper will discuss the work of Robert Wood Johnson Foundation committee on the future nursing and institute of medicine.
Work of Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Committee
The RWJFC plan on the future of nursing and IOM research is a move with a goal steering the entire model for work. As their main work, the Committee engaged the IOM to initiate and create a two-year plan relating to the future of nursing practice. The primary role was to create a report and also recommend for an action-oriented blueprint for nursing such as modification in the institutions and healthcare policies at all levels of government (Gillespie et al., 2018). In coming up with the report, the RWJFC projected some actions after the evaluation. Besides, its role is to attract and sustain fully-baked nurses in most of the healthcare facilities.
Importance of IOM Future of Nursing
Nurses can develop innovative strategies that can positively influence medical care. However, nurses have faced various problems in their line of duty. Some of the challenges faced by Nurses are due to structural issues linked to the medical care of the nation while others are because of the environmental factors while others are because of demographic makeups (Aiken, 2011). In regards to these problems, the government introduced various modification strategies to alter some of the policies by some state against the nursing practice. Based on this, the commission introduced the residency programs for nursing students ready to learn skills that are acceptable by all organizations.
The report proposed advancement of education system nurses to match the incoming changes taking place globally particularly in regards to technology. Due to this, the nurses were introduced to new machines and then educated on how to use them. To diversify their education, nurses are trained in how to manage clients from various cultures (Aiken, 2011). Moreover, Nurses are also encouraged to get a masters degree to advance their knowledge while in line with the practices.
Nursing Workforce Development
To make sure that the nurses improve their practice, the report projected that they should hold important leadership titles to contribute to the vision of the organization and to discuss the challenges faced by a nurse in performing their role. Through holding these leadership posts, nurses will be able to take part policy-making and can shun policies that do not favor the practice. Moreover, as a result of the report, the law of bringing both physicians and nurse together to learn together was applied. The law allows the nurse to interact with their advanced staff-mates and learn more from them.
Role of state-based coalition
The role of a state-based coalition is to campaign for better healthcare at the local level. It also helps in implementing the IOM within their states by making sure that the objectives of the IOM are advanced to promote leadership for nurses, nursing students applying for scholarships and increase access to care to their clients.
Two initiatives spearheaded by the state of Ohio action coalition
In Ohio, the state has participated in creating a good future for nurses by introducing some initiative. The two initiatives are leadership matter and funding opportunities for nursing.
The state introduced a strategy to fund nurses while taking a doctorate program. Thus, with such an opportunity, a nurse can advance their education and seek higher positions in the medical field. Besides, with a high position, a nurse can participate in major meetings and make important decisions. Based on this, there has been a significant change in the healthcare system of Ohio State. Although Ohio is currently towards attaining the objectives of the committee, there are still challenges that nurses go through (Altman, 2016). For instance, a nurse spends much time working hence unable to further their education and also lack funds to further their education since the salary is inadequate.
Nursing institutes in the US have greatly influenced nurse leadership by promoting nurse’s status as leaders. To begin with, the leadership matters comprise mentorship, professional coaching, and self-evaluation (Meleis, 2016). In regards to this, nurses can advance their knowledge and skills as they acquire essential techniques in their practice. Consequently, through this, the healthcare at Ohio has improved continuously.
The possible way by which nurse advocates can solve these challenges is to allow nurses to work based on their academic level. This will improve healthcare as patients will be able to rely on the ability of the nurse to deliver quality services. Besides, it can also be solved by hiring more nurses to counter the issue of shortage and also allow them to have some time for their studies.
The main reason for the committee was to create a good environment for nursing in the US. The committee proved its mandate as some of the policies influencing the field of nursing has been modified to create a suitable environment for nurses. Due to these strategies, nurses can give quality healthcare for their patients. For instance, Nurses in Ohio state can now further their education while working. The committee reported recommended a change in nursing regulation allowing for partnership between medics.
