Essay #1: Critical Analysis

Text of Your Choice

Assignment: Write a critical analysis of one of the poems or essays we have read thus far this semester (listed below). Explain the primary theme of the text and provide examples to support your position. You must commentate on and analyze the poem thoroughly; simple summary will not suffice. Explore the characters, setting, dialogue, etc. in relation to what you feel the author was trying to “say.” There is no one correct interpretation; there may be several perspectives. I will be grading you on whether or not you can back up your interpretation with specific examples from the text.

Texts to Choose From:

“On Ageing” by Maya Angelou

“Because I Could Not Stop for Death” by Emily Dickinson
